Lilac Crowned Amazon Parrot

Lilac Crowned Amazon Parrot

Scientific Name: Amazona finschi
Number in the wild: 7,000-10,000
Distribution: Western Mexico
Height: 33cm
Status: Vulnerable - Population declining

The Lilac crowned amazon is known for its sweet disposition and beautiful colouring, which may prove to be the species downfall as it is a great favourite in the pet trade. Exploitation for the pet trade along with habitat destruction mean that numbers in the wild are rapidly declining.

The Lilac Crown will display aggression towards other birds during breeding season and thusly breeding pairs must be separated at this time. This makes breeding in captivity very difficult resulting in yet more being removed from the wild.
