The Blue and yellow macaw has blue wings and tail, a dark blue chin, golden/yellow under parts and a green forehead. The bare white skin around the face can 'blush' as humans do, when they are excited. The Blue-and-yellow Macaw generally mates for life. It nests in a tree hole and the female typically lays two or three eggs. The female incubates the eggs for about 28 days, and the chicks fledge from the nest about 90 days after hatching. Blue and Gold Macaws live mainly in forests and often near water. Usually seen in pairs or small family groups, occasionally large flocks can be seen congregating at roosting sites, sometimes mixing with Green Winged Macaws. They are the second most popular parrot kept as pets in the UK after the African Grey Parrot. They are however totally unsuitable for most people due to their size and requirements both mentally and physically. |
